A Jolly Day at Edenbridge Rugby Club: Fundraising for The Greenaway Foundation
For the third year in a row the Edenbridge Rugby Club step up to help The Greenaway Foundation raise much needed funds to buy Christmas wishes for local children. And let us tell you, it was a day filled with more action than a rugby match itself!
From the moment people arrived, it was clear that the club was alive with the energy of children aged 3 to 18, all either training, playing or watching the three thrilling matches. The senior men’s and ladies’ teams were also in full attendance, with the men riding high on the wave of a fantastic away win against Medway. Talk about a winning streak!
The day kicked off in the best way possible—with a plethora of bacon sandwiches and coffee to fuel the festivities. Because let’s be honest, nothing says “let’s raise some money” quite like a full stomach! As if that wasn’t enough, attendees were treated to turkey and stuffing rolls and a cheeky pint of Guinness (or two) while our dedicated team of rugby elves got busy selling raffle tickets.
Now, let’s talk about those raffle prizes! Each age group raised funds to donate some truly spectacular prizes, including hampers from Harrods (yes, please!), a meal for two at Marco Pierre White’s flagship restaurant (who wouldn’t want to dine like royalty?), a Thames river cruise, international tickets to Twickenham, and many more delightful goodies. And let’s not forget the pièce de resistance, a signed British Lions shirt to be auctioned off. A huge thank you to every coach, parent, and player for their generous donations!
The atmosphere was electric as members and visitors flocked to Edenbridge RFC, including clubs friends from Chipstead RFC, who stayed late to show their support. Together, they raised an incredible £4,000, which included £325 from the auction alone. All of this went directly to The Greenaway Foundation, ensuring that at least 160 children’s Christmas wishes come true this year.
A massive shout-out must go to Chairman Jerome Basdeo, who does an incredible job bringing together members of all ages and abilities while making a significant impact in the local community. And let’s not forget Bev Thomas, the club’s treasurer, whose hard work behind the scenes keeps everything running smoothly.
As the day wrapped up, Jerome posed the ultimate question of the day: “How are we going to better that next year then???” Well, if the festive spirit and community support we witnessed are anything to go by, we have no doubt they’ll rise to the challenge!
Here’s to more laughter, camaraderie, and fundraising fun in the future. Thank you to everyone who made this event a resounding success together, we’re making a difference, one bacon sandwich at a time!
